Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Wasim Jaffer believes that Rohit Sharma & Co. would be disappointed with their batting display in the ODI series opener against Bangladesh National Cricket Team.
The India tour of Bangladesh 2022 kicked off with the first ODI of the three-match series at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday, December 4.

Losing the toss and batting first, India were bundled out for 186. KL Rahul was the top-scorer for his side as he scored incredible 73 runs off 70 balls, including 5 fours and 4 sixes.
Chasing the target, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals and they were reduced to 136/9. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s extraordinary batting efforts helped the Bangla Tigers win the match by 1 wicket and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Mehidy Hasan Miraz smashed a terrific 38* runs off 39 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes.
During an interaction on ESPNcricinfo, Wasim Jaffer talked about India’s batting performance and said that the batters would be disappointed with their shot selection in the match. He elaborated:
“There wasn’t like it was a square turning pitch, or there was too much bounce or a lot of up and down bounce on the pitch, it was just a little bit. But some shots that the Indians played, probably they’ll be disappointed. They got a little bit of a start and then they gave it away.
“I thought probably 30-40 more, 212 is an average score and if India would have gone past 220 or something, it could have been a pretty tough score for Bangladesh to chase. Even though India made a game out of it, playing literally 9 batters, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur coming in at 8 and 9, they’ll be disappointed with their batting display.”
They missed a lot of opportunities and gave away easy runs – Wasim Jaffer on India
During the same interaction, Wasim Jaffer was asked about his views on India’s mistakes on the field in the ODI series opener against Bangladesh. He responded:
“It can happen, India felt like the game was there for the taking and then you make those mistakes. But like I said, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, he fights and Mustafizur Rahman actually gave him a right stand in the 10th wicket. Not many times, you see a 50-plus partnership in the 10th wicket. India probably will look back they missed a lot of opportunities, they gave away easy runs, a couple of no balls, which cost them.”
Notably, KL Rahul dropped an easy catch of Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 43rd over and in the same over, Washington Sundar didn’t attempt a catch, which left Rohit Sharma furious. Also, there were a couple of no-balls bowled by Deepak Chahar. Overall, India were very poor on the field.
