Dhanbad judge dies as auto ‘deliberately’ hits him

He was hearing two high-profile murder cases and one pertaining to illegal coal transportation (theft).

Additional Sessions Judge of Dhanbad in Jharkhand Uttam Anand was fatally hit by an autorickshaw when he was jogging on an empty road about 500 m from his residence on Wednesday morning.

The incident of the ‘deliberate’ hit by the autorickshaw was initially thought to be a hit-and-run case. It was converted to a murder case after a CCTV footage went viral.

The autorickshaw suddenly veered towards the judge, who was running along the extreme left side of the road, and hit him. He fell on the ground and started bleeding. A passer-by took him to a hospital but he was declared brought dead. After a post-mortem, the body was sent to his house in Hazaribag district for last rites.

A high-level investigation has been initiated. The autorickshaw was seized from the neighbouring Girdih district and its owner identified. According to police, the vehicle was stolen around 2 a.m. and the judge knocked down a little after 5 a.m.

The judge was hearing two high-profile murder cases and one pertaining to illegal coal transportation (theft).

General secretary of the Dhanbad Bar Association Jitendra Kumar said, “This is a direct attack on the judiciary. Other judges and court employees now feel unsafe. An investigation should be conducted under the supervision of a retired judge”.

Forensic team members examined the autorickshaw for clues.
