By Sagay Raj: The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj association has filed a proposal to build a statue of Shivaji in Mangaluru with their own funds. The municipal corporation has also given consent for the same. However, Congress, in the city corporation council, has opposed the consent given by the council.
The council had agreed to give land near Indira Canteen at Pumpwell Junction for installing the statue of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Meanwhile, the local Congress corporators argued that statues of local heroes are needed first before Shivaji Maharaj.
Reacting to the Congress opposing the statue, BJP MLA from Mangaluru, Vedvyas Kamath, said, “I don’t know why congress is opposing the Shivaji statue. He’s a person known across India. It’ll be a tourist spot. Congress says to make statues of local heroes like Koti Chennaya. Congress made Koti Chennayya circle and look at the state of the circle today. We are redoing it. The Shivaji statue will happen.”
Ram Kadam, a Maharashtra BJP MLA and spokesperson also hit out at the Congress for opposing the statue. “On one hand, Congress uses foul language against Veer Savarkar, while on other hand it also opposes the statue of our great leader and saviour of Hindutva Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Mangluru,” said Ram Kadam.
He further added, “Shivaji Maharaj is not just the leader of a nation but the most efficient and bravest warrior in the world. He is god for us. Why does Congress always oppose our Hindu leaders, those who saved our nation from foreign intruders and attackers? Congress should apologise to the nation for opposing the statue of our great leader.”
